[IGFmaglist] IGF Istanbul press release?

I appreciate that the UN press team will be providing support to the IGF, and that is indeed helpful. To broaden media coverage, though, and diversify it, takes a bit more outreach.
I also find value in having a Press Statement from the Chair of the MAG, and here's another idea on how to promote that statement. If we have something from the Chair, all of the MAG members can distribute through various lists and contacts with their media contacts. The purpose of a press release is to gain journalists visibility, which results in their writing about, and following then the upcoming IGF.
A press ready statement from Janis, as Chair, could be posted by the national and regional IGF initiatives on their web sites, if that is consistent with their practices.
Last week, I did a background briefing for a couple of journalists. Just to explain the IGF, and how it works, and where to find remote participation, and transcripts. I reviewed the attendance, the HL event, the opening ceremony, and interesting events, with a highlight or two about the improvements to the IGF -- e.g. best practice forums. I cannot promise that they will follow the IGF, but it was helpful to be able to put it into perspective against all else going on in the policy world.

Hi Chengetai,

Yes, it is understood that the UN, in NY, will release information.

But would a message or a release coming from the MAG (or its chair) be conceivable? The communion of different stakeholder groups coming together in Istanbul to work on the way forward is important. Also, imo, a message coming from the MAG, in a button-up
fashion, would be in-line with the spirit of the IGF.

Best regards,

HI Constance,

The UN Department of Public Information has a press team that is attached to the IGF meeting and they have already started work.

They have already started with briefing packages for journalists and Assistant-Secretary-General Gass of UNDESA is already scheduled to give interviews.
We are also going through the UN radio etc..

The IGF meeting is also being advertised in the host country and as you may be aware we also work with the World Broadcasting Union (WBU).

Best regards,

Chengetai

Dear all,

To follow-up on yesterday's MAG call, and thinking about the efforts this community is putting in strengthening the IGF this year, I have been wondering if
the Secretariat or the MAG (or its chair?) could issue a press release early next week to announce the Istanbul event. It seems this would be in line with the recommendations of the CSTD WG on Improvements to the IGF, i.e., to find ways to leverage the work
 of the IGF.

The press release could announce the overall theme, the main themes, and also emphasize the outcomes on which the IGF community is working on (e.g. Roadmap
for IGF improvements, recommendations from the Chair, outcomes of the regional track, best practices, etc.).

Maybe the Secretariat could enlighten us on communication possibilities around the IGF as I am sure there are procedural aspects to it.

Best regards,
