Hello,

I think is a very good idea to have a newcomers booth in the Village Square

As a MAG member I commit myself to spend some hours to inform and help the newcomers.

best,

I think Marilyn, the booth idea if suitable can even have specific hours to serve new comers and thus may then require fewer volunteers who could be MAG or ex MAG members.

Certainly work needs to be done regarding briefing material and standardized talking point as you highlighted.

Certainly Liesyl point is valid in all cases and Miguel suggestion could be evaluated.

I am listening with great interest to the discussion about a booth that the MAG would staff and 'own', and ask that the Secretariat do a Doodle first, to gain commitments from MAG members to staff the booth, before it is can be considered. If a number of MAG members make a commitment of 3 hours each for the booth, which would have to cover all sessions, except the opening ceremony, it could work well.

I took a look at the schedule again, and that would mean, at least two MAG members, from different stakeholder groups hopefully, in the booth at all times, except for Opening Ceremony, and hopefully on Day Zero, as well, so 5 days X2 X 3 hours + 1.5 for lunch, so 7.5 X 5 days -- roughly 37 hours to cover X 2 so that there is diversity of perspective and expertise in the booth:
roughly 74 hours to cover. Divided by 3 hour commitments = roughly 24 or 25 MAG members would need to commit, and maintain that commitment.

I will have to decline, but if others are fully committed, and sign up and provide the staffing and agree to standard talking points, briefing materials, etc. for newcomers, I am open.

I agree with Liesyl, something like the ICANN booth they held every meeting.

In addition to Laura’s good points, I like Ginger’s idea of a newcomer’s booth (or area of some kind) as a focal point for getting information, etc. If it’s feasible, one thing to keep in mind (for space, staffing, etc.) is that it might become an “information booth” for all IGF-ers…new or not…! I agree with Wisdom, Marilyn and Laura, and would like to raise again (I can't remember who suggested it initially) the possibility of an IGF newcomers' booth in the Village Square. This could serve as a focal point for outreach, IGF information, and orientation for first timers.

Thanks, Ginger

Hi all,

One of things that we discussed at the MAG meeting in Geneva was ways in which we could encourage new people to participate in the IGF and how was could make the meeting as accessible and welcoming as possible for these newcomers. We talked about having introductory sessions and also possibly having a mentor scheme with members of the MAG.

I would like to suggest that when the IGF opens for registrations one of the fields on the registration form should ask people to flag if it is their first meeting. This would firstly provide stats on how successful we’ve been in encouraging new participants which would be useful in itself even if we don’t do anything else with the information. Secondly, it would allow for the flexibility to target the newcomers with briefing material or welcome packs in advance to help support their participation and answer any questions they might have. It would also mean that we could mark newcomer badges in some way (as ICANN do at their meetings) to encourage other delegates to support and talk to them.

I’d welcome MAG members thoughts on this and other ideas for making the IGF as accessible as possible for newcomers.

Kind regards
Laura
