A further point, and apologies that this is coming too late in the day, but is there a template that should have been used for BPF proposals.

My BPF Cybersecurity proposal was developed using a template we’d been using the last few years, but it’s provenance predates my involvement - it might have been originally provided as a template for all BPF proposals, and does provide some of the information Sylvia mentioned is useful to take into account when considering proposals.

Ben

Dear Sylvia and all

Thanks for raising this. It is indeed important. Let's have a frank discussion on this in Geneva. We can reflect on the number of responses to calls for input from BPFs, the consistency and extent of coordination, and participation in calls and sessions. There will be inputs from 2019 BPFs and from the Secretariat on the BPF process that can support this discussion.

I will check in with the Secretariat on this as well so that we can be as well-prepared as possible for the discussion.

Best

Anriette

Thanks Chengetai.

Dear MAG colleagues,

I was not directly involved in the BPFs last year -hats off to you all that did your best!-. I think it is really important highlight that the BPFs require A LOT! of work not only from those MAG members coordinating as well as for the consultants that take on the job with the documents preparation, etc.

Before approving new proposals, is there any criteria to assess the 2019 BPFs? I think it will be good to evaluate the level of interest and engagement they got, to see what is attracting more attention from the community to see what has clear support for rechartering? Although there are many topics worth working on, I believe the IGF will continue to improve if we try to keep focus.

Could the Secretariat please confirm how many BPFs the IGF secretariat can support this year? I believe it is really important that we stick to that limit. Last year we stretched it again to 4, although there were funds for 3. It is true the financial situation for the IGF secretariat improved slightly, thanks to the German government contribution, but in my opinion, the MAG needs to help, by making sure we don’t ask the Secretariat to do more than it is really possible and blow the budget.

For the new MAG members, it will be good if a bit of information about how much work that actually entails is collated so that people has a bit more clarity about what is expected of them as their support will be required even if they did not submitted the proposal. It is really important to have more MAG members actively contributing and supporting the process.

Will it be possible for the Secretariat to organize a poll of sorts so that preferences can be expressed by those of us not in Geneva in a way that is a bit easier to count/track?

Regards,

Sylvia

During the face-to-face January Open Consultations and MAG meeting we would like the MAG to make a decision on the BPF’s for 2020. We therefore call for BPF proposals that the MAG may consider for chartering or rechatering for the 2020 cycle.

We would be grateful if these could be sent to the Secretariat and/or the MAG list by 10 January, so the MAG can have time to look at them and reflect before the face-to-face meeting.

Apologies for the compressed time frame.

Best regards

Chengetai
