Format description: a practical 90 min workshop designed to provide the right knowledge and practical tools and methods for journalists to circumvent censorship.

Interventions

After raising awareness about the new security breaches which threaten journalists’ work, Nicolas Diaz, an IT security consultant will give concrete day-to-day tools and methods to circumvent censorship. He will for example share tips to protect journalists’ identity online. The workshop will then leave time for debate, questions and answers of the audience in order to fully embrace the scope of the topic.

Diversity

The aim of the session is to invite as much different profiles of journalists and activists as possible (in terms of nationality, gender, field of work). RSF will therefore engage in a strong effort of advocacy to attract various profiles before the event, using for example social medias to gather them.

Nicolas Diaz is an IT security consultant who animates training & develop tools to circumvent censorship for Reporters without Borders. He’s a consultant for Yes We Hack.

The goal of this flash session is to empower journalists through concretes advices and an interactive session. How can they protect their sources and their identity ? How can they avoid cyber-attacks ? What are the simple but necessary reflexes they could develop ?

The moderation will be interactive and inclusive. The audience will get the possibility to express its own view and ask for advice and tips to encourage innovation during the Q&A. The goal of the moderator will be to promote the exchange of best practices between the participants to maximise the impact of the session, so that everybody gets the possibility to find out concrete solutions

This is a cat-and-mouse game. Pressures on Telegram, end of Domain Fronting… Journalists and human rights activists are increasingly dealing with a strengthening of censorship. How can they find new tools to circumvent censorship ?

Online Participation

RSF offers to ensure online participation with a streaming with a live streaming on our Facebook fan page (more than 250 000 followers). We will provide them with the possibility to interact with us during the debate. The moderator will ask questions from our online community at the end of the debate. The idea is to deliver an inclusive, collaborative and crowd-sourced presentation.
