    Connection with previous Messages: The workshop will draw fall under the theme of Governing Data and Protecting Privacy. It will look at the interlinkage between freedom of expression and the right to privacy, access to information and the challenges in upholding these rights in the face of new technologies.

    Targets: The project proposal will assure access to information, while respecting other fundamental rights such as privacy.

    Description:

    The workshop will draw on two UNESCO Publications, Guidelines for Judicial Actors on Privacy and Data Protection and forthcoming Policy brief on the Right to Access to Information and Privacy. The workshop will provide an opportunity for commissioners to assess matters of privacy and data protection in the face of other rights. These rights include freedom of expression and the right to privacy, access to information and the challenges in upholding these rights in the face of new technologies. Landmark decisions from high courts relating to freedom of expression and privacy rights will also be presented and discussed. The workshop will replicate lessons learnt from the Training for privacy commissioners on the right to privacy, data protection and freedom of expression that took place on 2 May 2022 in Punta del Este, Uruguay and focus this time on the Africa region in cooperation with the African Network of Information Commissioners.

    Expected Outcomes

    - Application of the Guidelines for Judicial Actors on Privacy and Data protection
    - Sensitization on the Right to Information and Privacy
    - Training of African Information Commissioners on Privacy, Data protection and Access to Information

    Hybrid Format: The workshop will fully take into account the fact that the event is a hybrid event. On-site participants will be able to exchange with online participants in reviewing landmark decisions from high courts relating to freedom of expression and privacy rights.

    The workshop will allow for presentations on site but also using online facilities. The participants will be able to interact with both audiences in order to favor exchange and sharing of good practices.

    MentiMeter will be used to engage the audience on some of the privacy issues to address as well as interpretations of the landmark decisions from high courts relating to freedom of expression and privacy rights.
