    Policy Question(s)

    1. How can we use big data, the Internet of things and the platform services of world data center to support and provide services to the geographic indication products for the regional ecological environment and local sustainable development?
    2. What policy should be formulated to ensure a reliable, full open, traceable and applicable computer network system of the geographic indications?
    3. In the process of practice, how we developed a multi-stakeholder cooperation methodology to ensure that the program is publicly available, sharable, and replicable?

    Connection with previous Messages:

    SDGs

    1. No Poverty
    2. Zero Hunger
    3. Good Health and Well-Being
    14. Life Below Water
    15. Life on Land
    17. Partnerships for the Goals

Targets: In the implementation of the UN SDGs, Goal 1, Goal 2, Goal 14 and Goal 15 have become crucial parts for the environment protection and socio-economic development. They have been widely implemented in developed regions and most of urban areas. However, they are very prominent due to the infrastructure, natural disasters, less development, lost of education in mountain areas, small islands and critical zones in ecosystem, the contradiction between environmental protection and socio-economic development is a big challenges and it is still difficult to achieve the SDGs in these areas. Geographic indications with the support of advancing technologies, such as Internet of Things and Big Data, provide the ICT solutions to promote sustainability.

    Description:

In the implementation of the UN SDGs, Goal 1, Goal 2, Goal 14 and Goal 15 have become crucial parts for the environment protection and socio-economic development. Geographical Indications(GI) play a key role to address these challenges. It is supported by advanced technology including the Internet of Things and Big Data.

The Geographical Indications Environment and Sustainability 2021-2030 Program (GIES) aims to integrate geographical science, advanced technology and intellectual property into geographical products through ICT and widely disseminate them. The program use the platform services of advanced technology including Big Data; the Internet of things and the world data center to provide services for the intellectual property, regional ecological environment and local sustainable development through open scientific. For example, the world data center and scientific data were utilized to publish the data, open knowledge by publishing papers through the academic journals, and monitor the ecological environment by establishing a local ecological environment monitoring system and combining it with remote sensing satellite images. By the way of Internet of Things, QR system, consumers can directly trace the source of products and learn about world geography and foreign cultures using cell phones.

However, how to establish a reliable, fully open, traceable and applicable computer network system, how to supervise the application of advanced technologies (Internet of Things and big data) in the field of geographical indications in a timely manner, and which policies to formulate are the concerns of multi-stakeholders and the key issues need to be solved cooperatively.

The workshop on "ICT solutions on geographical indications for sustainability" aims to facilitate discussion and cooperation among different stakeholders to discuss how to use advanced technology of big data and Internet of Things technology to monitor the ecological environment related to geographic products, in order to develop high-quality geographic products to promote ecological protection and sustainable development.

    Expected Outcomes

    1. Reach consensus on the ways Internet of Things and Big Data can support the geographic indications products and to promote sustainability.
    2. Identify key challenges to the governance and supervision of the application of Internet of Things and Big Data in geographic indications.
    3. Formulate policy to ensure a reliable, full open, traceable and applicable computer network system of the geographic indications.
    4. Establish cooperation mechanisms and a follow-up action plan between multi-stakeholders.

Hybrid Format: Both online and onsite moderator will introduce the theme and policy issues of the workshop to speakers and attendees online and onsite. Each speaker will have around 5 minutes to share their views over each policy question of the workshop, and after each round of presentation both online and onsite participants have 10 minutes to put forward questions and have open discussions with the speakers guided by the online and onsite moderators. Online attendees will have a separate queue and microphone which rotate equally with the mics in the room and is entitled to raise questions after each presentation of the speaker and engage during the discussion.

The workshop will be promoted through various social networking platforms in addition to the platform provided by the IGF Secretariat to ensure remote participation. The organizing team will collect the views and questions from the social media ahead of the debate to ensure more views from different stakeholders groups are involved in this workshop.
