    5. Gender Equality


    Targets: Access to the internet gives a lot of opportunities. It could reduce poverty by giving access to for instance farmers in remote rural communities information about how to improve their farming and access to customers beyond their immediate community. It will also reduce the digital gap which will enhance equality. Internet enabled continued education during the COVID19 lockdown. This workshop will highlight how the access to the internet will contribute to the achievement of this SDG goals.

    Description:

    According to Statistica, the internet penetration rate in Nigeria is 50%; Internet access generated by mobile devices in Nigeria is 84.4% while the number of online shoppers in Nigeria is 76.7m. This workshop will highlight the role of the media in driving internet accessibility and inclusiveness in Nigeria. Access to the internet has become a fundamental human right that enables every form of right like the right to freedom of expression. Policies driving internet penetration will be looked into and the policy and infrastructural gaps will be looked into.

    Expected Outcomes

    Action plan from media professionals on interventions that could drive or increase internet access in Nigeria.
    Advance the debate on affordably and internet penetration in Nigeria

    Hybrid Format: After the speakers have made their presentations there will be a breakout session where issues affecting internet penetration can be looked at and possible solutions developed. A communique will be issued from the Action plan. The Zoom platform will be used for the online participants.
