Description

Oftentimes conversations on internet governance leave out the media and media practitioners in the discourse. This leaves the majority of the population at a place where they are digitally illiterate as a result of the lack of communication. From the training perspective, media professionals rarely learn about issues on Internet Governance. A few who have taken interest in IG issues have not made much impact.

This session will begin with the exploration of Addis Ababa Messages from IGF 2022 pertinent to Digital Divides and Inclusion. The speakers will delve into aspects of how the knowledge gap can be considered one of the reasons people only hear or see reports related to cybercrime and cybersecurity when there is a big scandal or threat and later dies down.

Conversations of such nature ideally ought to continue in the media to empower ordinary citizens and internet users with information that contribute to the stable and secure internet. The young panelists will speak about the specific reality of their countries and regions, with focus on cases of how politicians have used the media quite extensively such that the media has in certain times been tagged the “king maker”.

Despite the power and how vast the internet is, a number of stakeholders in internet governance have not used the power of the media to shape the internet for the better at every given chance. Our speakers believe and will bring data to prove that the media needs to be involved and actively engaged in IG to effectively promote access and digital inclusion. Involving media personnel in IG discussions is one of the steps to reducing the knowledge gap in the media on IG.

The session aims to facilitate a roundtable where participants will be part of the session itself.
Tentative agenda:
5’: Introduction and background. The moderator explains how the session will take place and points out that attendees can ask questions by using the hand-raising option or in the chat (online), or by requesting the floor (onsite).
40’: The moderator introduces the policy issues and addresses the speakers with questions in a roundtable fashion.
10’: Open floor. The moderator invites all participants to take the floor either online or onsite.
5’: Key takeaways (rapporteur) and conclusions.

The session is going to ensure interactions through a Q&A and comment section in the online application where the session will be taking place (e.g. Zoom). Both online and onsite moderators will make sure that the questions and comments are not overlooked through effective communication, but play an important role throughout the session
