IGF 2024 Open Forum #74 Exploring Digital Cooperation Models for SDG attainment

    Roundtable
    Duration (minutes): 60
Format description: A facilitated roundtable discussion will provide an opportunity for multiple perspectives from various stakeholders, including countries, multilaterals, and civil society, to be heard and reflect the nature of digital cooperation needed to accelerate the attainment of the SDGs and close the digital divide. Sixty minutes would allow for an in-depth, dynamic, moderated yet relatively free-flowing discussion. The room can be set up in a conference room style with a large table in the middle or as a panel in the front of the room, depending on resources and space available.

    Description

Politicians, policy makers and regulatory authorities face innumerous challenges when it comes to digitalization . New technologies are being developed at an enormous pace, creating new opportunities to address inequities but also putting pressure and raising uncertainty on its impact on our societies, economies, political structures and even on our security while often overlooking existing technologies and digital cooperation models that already have proven to be successful and have the ability to be implemented and adapted to meet the needs of new contexts.
For this reason it is of the utmost importance that governments, civil society, industry, academia and other stakeholders come together to close the digital divide.

This roundtable discussion intends to be a space for dialogue between governments and other stakeholders from different regions to come together and explore various digital cooperation models - including technology and knowledge sharing that can produce meaningful impacts for citizens across the globe. It will also address the lessons learned from such cooperation activities.

The cooperation activities of Anacom (Portugal) with Portuguese speaking countries and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’s collaboration with the Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) will serve as the starting point for this dialogue.

    Targets:

A roundtable discussion on strengthening digital cooperation through digital public goods is crucial for implementing nationally appropriate social protection systems (Target 1.3) and ensuring equal access to economic resources and basic services (Target 1.4), thereby substantially covering the poor and vulnerable by 2030.
Enhancing digital cooperation via digital public goods supports the achievement of higher levels of economic productivity (Target 8.2) and the development of resilient infrastructure (Target 9.1), which are essential for sustainable economic growth and human well-being, particularly in least developed countries.
Such a discussion can promote mechanisms for effective climate change planning (Target 13.b) and strengthen transparent institutions given the open nature of DPGs (Target 16.6), while fostering international cooperation on science, technology, and innovation (Target 17.6) to support developing countries in implementing their national plans and sustainable development goals through the use of technology.
