Internet fraud has become a major societal problem. End-users loose over 1 trillion dollars every year and ¼ of the global population have lost money to fraud, according to figures from GASA. A large proportion of scam use social manipulation, phishing, identity theft and disclosure of sensitive information with the help of false links and the like. It also has a negative impact on the general trust in society. This has adverse effects on social participation, integration and value creation. This session discusses how to maintain trust in internet communication and in the content conveyed via the internet. Avenues to explore this ranges from establishing measures such as regulations and institutions safeguarding internet communications, to educating citizens to become more resilient to fraud by increasing their knowledge on how to stay safe online.
