Targets: In order to establish a sustainable Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), affordable access (SDG 9.c) for schools (SDG 4) and health stations (SDG 3) is essential. Information (SDG 16.10) on health, education, governmental services and other non-profitable services are seen as national public goods, and the access to these services should be universal human right in the digital era.

The launch event is planned as a presentation of the success story by connecting more than 200 schools in Tanzania, and an invitation to mobile operators worldwide to join the AA4EDU. The launch partner Vodacom Tanzania will present their reasons and offer for AA4EDU (15 min) Experiences from practitioners, including IGF in Tanzania and Ethiopia, the GSMA Mobile for Development (M4D) and the IEEE Connecting the Unconnected, will contribute with their experiences (8 min each). The remaining time will be used to address the questions from the hybrid auditorium.
The launch of “Affordable Access for Education and Health” (AA4EDU) addresses a sustainable solutions to connect schools, health stations and non-profit centres in communities. The current situation is dominated by the fact that Internet access is considered too expensive for the majority of people. There is also a perception among users that the Internet is not useful for their daily lives and that digital solutions are technology and difficult to learn. The common agreement to connect all the schools of the world is hampered by the operational costs, often exceeding the budget that schools have for Internet connection. Our launch partner Vodacom Tanzania offers unlimited SIM-based fixed wireless connectivity at 10 Mbps for 60 kTZS (~US$22), which is affordable for most schools and health centres. GSMA Mobile for Development (M4D), IEEE Connecting the Unconnected (CTU) and the IGF in Tanzania, Ethiopia with their partner networks have adopted AA4EDU as one solution for an affordable digital public infrastructure (DPI) addressing the needs of developing economies.
The online moderator will encourage contributions by the auditorium in a digital form, visible to the presenters and the auditorium through digital means (e.g. slido).
