Description
The aim of this session is to show how, thanks to an open and participative governance model, we have managed to create a free software project that has had a great impact on a global level.
We want to share with the community what are the main elements that have brought us this far and what are the challenges that the project is currently facing. In order to discuss the challenges and opportunities that Digital Public Goods will face in the coming years.
In this panel, we will explain the impact that the Decidim project has had at a global level and how the challenges of managing the growth of an international community have been addressed.
The case of Decidim is practically unique in the world. It is a free/libre and open-source software promoted first by a public administration and which, gradually, has managed to create an international community that actively contributes to the improvement of the software.
Decidim is currently used by more than 500 organisations in 30 different countries. Of these, 240 are cities and government organisations and 180 are social organisations.
This sessions will focus on:
How to collaborate with governments when developing a Digital Public Good
The governance model that we set up to allow public-common collaboration in code development. The model is exemplary for those who want to promote FLOSS projects with a public-community management.
Challenges to manage a growing global community composed by a wide variety of actors, such as: Governments, service providers companies, NGOs, cooperatives, activists, researchers and designers.
Decidim's popularity and growth over the past 4 years have led to increased code contributions, community engagement, and coordination efforts, demanding extensive work to sustain the project's open and collaborative nature. At the same time, we are facing a big challenge regarding the economic sustainability of the project.
The panel is aimed at people interested in how to manage FLOSS or DPG projects, for people who are energising communities or designing participatory processes, or for those interested in how FLOSS projects can make a real difference impacting the people’s life. We will talk about a real case that is in a process of growth and extension, and that is attracting a lot of attention at an international level. During the session, there will be the option to send questions through an online channel.
