SDGs
5.2
5.3
8.7
16.2
Targets: Leaked aligns with SDG 16.2, 8.7, 5.3, and 5.2 by addressing digital risks that contribute to child exploitation, trafficking, and gender-based violence. It supports SDG 16.2 by equipping young people and educators with tools to prevent online child sexual exploitation and abuse. In line with SDG 8.7, it raises awareness of technology-facilitated trafficking and coercion, disrupting pathways to exploitation. Leaked also advances SDG 5.3 by challenging harmful gender norms and educating youth on consent, bodily autonomy, and digital rights, ensuring protection against modern forms of exploitation. Finally, it contributes to SDG 5.2 by tackling online gender-based violence, advocating for stronger legal protections, and empowering young women and girls to navigate digital spaces safely. Through a data-driven, preventative approach, Leaked strengthens global efforts to create safer, more equitable digital environments for young people.

Description
Traditional online safety approaches often rely on fear-based, abstinence messaging—such as just telling young people “don’t send nudes”—rather than equipping them with the skills, knowledge, or agency to navigate digital risks safely. However, research shows that young people are already engaging in self-generated sexual content (SGSC), and not all instances result in harm. To build a safer digital future, we must move beyond the abstinence narrative and toward engendering digital trust and resilience.
This lightning talk will share insights from the ‘Leaked’ Project, a large-scale study with 2,000 young people in Thailand. Unlike most research, which focuses on Western contexts, Leaked provides a rare and essential perspective on how young people in non-Western settings experience and manage digital risks. Its findings show that young people said that the three main reasons that they believe peers share nudes are for social validation (51.5%), for financial gain (47.1%), and for self-confidence and empowerment (44.1%). By recognizing the full spectrum of online experiences—from coercion and exploitation to consensual sharing within relationships—Leaked offers a data-driven framework for governments, technology companies, and educators to design policies and interventions that center the realities of young people from Global South cultural and economic contexts.
This session will explore how evidence-based digital safety strategies can support cybersecurity, data governance, and online rights, ensuring that young people are both protected and empowered in the evolving digital landscape.
NOTE: Data collection is completed and by the time of IGF, the Leaked report will be finalized, and we will be ready to share our final findings and policy recommendations. Phase two – using the data to pilot an intervention for 2,000 young people – will be underway in the second half of 2025. To ensure seamless interaction between onsite and online attendees during our Lightning Talk, we can utilize real-time audience engagement tools such as Slido or Mentimeter for quick polls and Q&A, allowing both remote and in-person participants to contribute. A live moderator will monitor online questions and alternate between virtual and onsite audiences during the brief Q&A segment. Our session will be designed for maximum clarity and engagement, using concise, visually engaging slides, dynamic storytelling, and real-world case studies to keep all participants actively involved. To enhance accessibility, we will share QR codes linking to the Leaked Project brief and final report. Additionally, we will encourage social media engagement via LinkedIn and Twitter (X) or Bluesky using an event hashtag, extending the conversation beyond the session.
