Targets: Noticias Sin Filtro is an innovative solution that leverages technology to overcome barriers to information access, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. By integrating a VPN within the app, it ensures that users can access news without the need for additional technical knowledge or steps, promoting the adoption of censorship circumvention technology in everyday life. This effort directly supports SDG 9, particularly target 9.c, which aims to "significantly increase access to information and communications technology and strive to provide universal and affordable access to the Internet in least developed countries." Noticias Sin Filtro is available to users at no intrinsic cost, and its development was entirely driven by Venezuelan talent in collaboration with independent news media outlets in the country. The app also plays a crucial role in upholding SDG 16, specifically target 16.10, which seeks to "ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements." In Venezuela, where independent media faces heavy censorship and internet blocks, Noticias Sin Filtro supports the right to freedom of information.
    Format
The lighting talk will have three speakers: two from Conexión Segura y Libre, and one from Jigsaw. During 20 to 25 minutes the speakers will do a presentation around the app Noticias Sin Filtro, how it works, how it's being used in Venezuela, how it benefits independent media outlets, and how the Outline SDK is being used for internet circumvention within the app (and in others solutions too). After the presentation, we expect to have a few minutes to briefly respond to any questions from participants.

    Description
Noticias Sin Filtro is an anti-censorship newsreader app that allows users to access independent news in Venezuela, overcoming the pervasive internet censorship in the country. While VPNs and other tools can be effective, their user adoption is often low. By functioning primarily as a newsreader, Noticias Sin Filtro offers a more culturally acceptable anti-censorship solution. The app features a customizable news feed and access to full news articles through a webview, ensuring users visit the original news portals that published the stories. The app leverages the Outline SDK, developed by Jigsaw, to implement anti-censorship transports on all connections. This integration allows the app to circumvent online censorship in a resilient and seamless manner, providing users with uninterrupted access to news. Noticias Sin Filtro was deployed before the 2024 presidential elections in Venezuela and has a wide range of news media partners, fighting for the freedom of information and helping the independent media ecosystem in the country. One of the goals of Noticias Sin Filtro is to promote access to uncensored news as a fundamental right, while supporting digital literacy and addressing digital inequalities. This solution is not only impactful in Venezuela but also applicable in other contexts where internet censorship is present. By using the Outline SDK, the app offers a robust framework that can be adapted to ensure unrestricted access to information in various regions. https://noticiassinfiltro.com/download https://getoutline.org/

Since this is a lighting talk, we understand that there won't be any support for virtual participation. However, in case this changes, we would love to have the opportunity to live stream the talk for online participants, even if they won't be able to interact with the speakers.
