Description
The global economy is increasingly driven by technological progress, innovation, and productivity gains, creating strong links between economic, environmental, and social outcomes. However, inclusive progress requires integrating disability mainstreaming and accessibility into technological advancements. Despite the crucial role of technological and product innovation in achieving sustainable socio-economic development, most technologies lack essential accessibility features, limiting inclusion and participation.
Sustainable development technologies and environmental technologies, though interrelated, serve distinct purposes. Environmental technologies focus on reducing, eliminating, and compensating for pollution through efficient production, remediation, and maintenance processes. Sustainable technologies pursue broader objectives, such as maintaining ecological balance and addressing inequalities across economic, social, and environmental dimensions, including barriers faced by persons with disabilities.
To drive inclusive progress, sustainable technologies ought to incorporate accessibility standards from design to implementation, ensuring usability for persons with disabilities. Disability mainstreaming should be embedded within policies and practices, fostering equitable access to technological advancements and sustainable solutions.
