Targets: This networking event centres on how to build equitable online spaces for groups often targetted in the online public sphere, such as racial and ethnic minorities and gender minorities. It therefore supports their equality and inclusion within and between different countries.
    Format
    Roundtable

Activists speak to the participants about their lived experiences and work with human rights in the offline and digital space for 15 minutes, they then share the ways in which the defense of human rights must change by recognizing not only the threats but the promising tools available in the online space, including on social media, for 15 minutes. Afterwards, the group will come together (including participants) to chart a new way forward, combine our shared goals, and collaborate on future activism for the rest of the allotted time.
    Duration (minutes)

    Description
In the digital age, threats to human rights have taken on a new character, armed with algorithms from large social media platforms which showcase, glorify, and encourage violence, as well as virality that huddles rights violators to new heights of online fame, changes in threats to human rights have necessitated a rethinking of activism. We, therefore, convene this networking event, bringing together activists with varied experiences on the ground, fighting back against human rights violations and sometimes ending up in the crosshairs of arbitrary arrests, violence, and threats. They will speak to the audience about the ways in which the defense of human rights must change by recognizing not only the threats but the promising tools available in the online space, including on social media. Afterwards, the group will come together (including participants) to chart a new way forward, combine our shared goals, and collaborate on future activism.

his interactive session invites participants as co-creators in future collaborators to take activism forward. After hearing from our inspiring speakers, we will work on a shared online document, which will be projected for those joining in person and shared with those online to first brainstorm individually then come together (raising their physical and virtual hands) to explore new avenues for advocacy in the digital space and in the digital age. We will talk about the most pressing threats in this new space and create a plan for future collaboration in which we address and tackle these threats, also using digital technologies for forge a way ahead. Participants are thus invited to think not just about this session but how this session will be the gateway to future collaboration. This leaves them energized and ready to translate these findings and advocacy objectives into meaningful activities for their individual organisations and causes. Through the use of tools like Mirro board and Google Docs, online participants will find it easy to contribute their thoughts. They can also raise their virtual hands to interrupt or share their experiences.
