Targets: 8.2 The open and interoperable Internet, enabled by technical standards, drives technological innovation, enables permissionless innovation, empowering startups, and enhances productivity across industries, contributing to economic growth. 8.3 Internet standards enable digital entrepreneurship, remote work, and the expansion of SMEs, ensuring a level playing field and fostering broader competition. By enabling businesses to expand their reach and innovate, Internet standards support a diverse and competitive digital ecosystem. The networking session strengthens the link between technical innovation and policy-making. 9.1 Internet technical standards ensure a resilient, scalable, and interoperable Internet infrastructure, and permit regional deployments and development by local organisations, which is critical for global connectivity and digital inclusion. 9.5 The technical community’s role in standardization, research, and open innovation aligns with strengthening technological capabilities and fostering global digital cooperation. Open technical standards promote innovation and technology transfer, empowering developing nations to participate in the digital economy. 16.6 The session promotes multi-stakeholder engagement in Internet governance, ensuring transparent and accountable decision-making. 16.7 By bringing together technical and policy communities, the session enhances inclusivity and participatory governance in Internet standards development and policy discussions and provides practical support in how to best build engagement between government and technical community. 17.6 Internet standards are developed through open and transparent collaboration among global stakeholders, fostering international cooperation in technology and innovation. 17.16 The technical community adheres to an open, consensus-driven approach to standards development, playing a vital role in the multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance.

Description
This session is proposed by some members of the technical community at IGF, welcoming all stakeholders interested in understanding and enhancing the role of technical experts in Internet governance discussions and encouraging dialogue between the technical and policy communities.
Objectives:
While technical standards and protocols shape the foundation of the Internet, there is often a disconnect between policy discussions and technical decision-making. This interactive networking session aims to be an ice-breaker in the hope of bridging the gaps between governance/policy v/s technical discussions. The networking session aims to be a gathering of the technical community and other stakeholder groups that wish to interact with the technical community in an informal social space.
Further, this session will pose some seeding questions for the gathering to explore how the multi-stakeholder model can be strengthened through deeper engagement between technical and policy communities, ensuring that governance and policy frameworks benefit from technical insights while considering policy and societal needs. How can the engagement between these communities be improved? Are there lessons or pitfalls from the past? How can the technical community be encouraged to incorporate governance and policy feedback into their work and vice-versa?
The session will be structured as an open and interactive gathering, allowing participants to share experiences, challenges, and strategies for improving collaboration. Rather than being a formal panel discussion, the session will facilitate direct exchanges through:
- Short introductory remarks
- Seeding questions from the moderators
- Open mic
- Concrete takeaways
This session welcomes all stakeholders interested in strengthening the integration of technical expertise into Internet governance. Governments from developing nations could utilize the Internet standards ecosystem to empower their digital economy.
This Networking Session will provide an inclusive and engaging experience for both onsite and online participants, using structured interaction and remote conferencing tools. Members of the technical community will participate onsite and online, ensuring diverse representation. Two moderators will coordinate the discussion, ensuring equal opportunities for engagement between onsite and online attendees. The focus will be on interaction and networking rather than long speeches. Online, participation will be encouraged through chat, and technical community members will be available virtually for networking and discussions.
