Targets: This session directly aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10 on Reduced Inequalities and its targets 10.3 and 10.A, which aim to ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities in access to information and technology. Target 10.3 (Equal Opportunity and Reduced Inequalities): Promoting a multilingual Internet addresses the barriers that people face in accessing information and services due to language differences. By enabling digital content in multiple languages, we promote equal access to the benefits of the Internet, which is critical in reducing social and economic inequalities, especially in marginalized and underrepresented communities. Target 10.A (Facilitate Migration and Mobility): Multilingualism can help foster better communication and understanding across cultures and borders, improving the integration of migrants and refugees into digital ecosystems. Supporting a multilingual Internet enables them to access services, participate in digital economies, and stay connected with their communities. This session will address how technology, policy, and international cooperation can enhance linguistic diversity, providing solutions that help achieve these SDG targets by ensuring that no one is left behind due to language barriers in the digital world.

Case studies showcasing successful multilingual initiatives in countries and regions, demonstrating the impact of multilingualism in fostering digital inclusion. Open discussions with the audience to explore practical solutions and barriers to implementing a multilingual Internet. Q&A session where participants can engage with panelists, either onsite or virtually.

The session focuses on promoting a multilingual Internet to ensure digital inclusivity and equitable access for all global communities. In this event, we will explore the importance of fostering linguistic diversity in the digital space, highlighting the role of multilingualism in bridging digital divides, empowering marginalized communities, and creating a more inclusive online environment. Discussions will focus on challenges such as the dominance of major languages, limited local language content, and the need for robust infrastructure to support multilingualism on the Internet. We will explore collaborative efforts by governments, civil society, tech companies, and international organizations in advancing linguistic diversity, and how multilingualism can be integrated into emerging technologies like AI, search engines, and social media platforms. The session will link to several IGF2025 issue areas, including: Digital Inclusion: Ensuring equitable access for users across languages and cultures. Accessibility and Affordability: How multilingual content can be made more accessible to all users, particularly in underrepresented languages. Innovation and Emerging Technologies: Addressing the role of AI and machine learning in promoting multilingualism.
1: How will you facilitate interaction between onsite and online speakers and attendees? 1A: We will designate a facilitator responsible for managing questions and discussions from both onsite and online participants to ensure smooth interaction. The facilitator will actively monitor virtual and onsite question submissions and make sure both groups can contribute equally. 1B: Real-time translation will be offered for key questions and remarks from participants, ensuring multilingual inclusion. 2:How will you design the session to ensure the best possible experience for online and onsite participants? 2A: Simultaneous interpretation will be available in multiple languages, ensuring participants can follow the session regardless of their language preference. For example, providing interpretation services in major UN languages such as English, Spanish, Arabic, French, and Russian. 2B: Interactive technologies like live polls, Q&A platforms, and virtual chat rooms will be used to keep online participants engaged. We will ensure a high-quality stream with clear audio and video for online participants, ensuring no technical barriers to engagement. 3: Please note any complementary online tools/platforms you plan to use to increase participation and interaction during the session. 3A: Zoom/WebEx will be used for hybrid participation, allowing virtual attendees to directly ask questions or contribute to the session.
