How can policies enable frontline healthcare workers to carry and dispense OTC medicines for common ailments in rural areas while ensuring safety and compliance? What training models can equip individuals in remote areas to capture vital signs effectively, and how can we develop a cadre of remote technicians with basic literacy to support frontline healthcare?
What will participants gain from attending this session? Participants will explore the success of the Patients’ Union initiative and how AI-driven conversational tools, LLMs, and teleconsultations can enhance access and empowerment with minimal investment. History proves that South-South collaboration effectively addresses regional healthcare challenges. This model showcases how technology and cross-border partnerships can resolve 60-80% of acute healthcare issues while fostering micro OTC entrepreneurs. The Patients’ Union model has the potential to transform primary care delivery worldwide.
    Description:

Over 60 nations, including India and many African countries, face a severe shortage of qualified doctors. In these Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), 80% of health issues are acute conditions that can be effectively managed remotely through digital health solutions—saving millions of lives lost to preventable illnesses. The Patients’ Union Initiative harnesses remote consultations and AI-driven healthcare to provide life-saving care to underserved populations. This innovative approach not only ensures free medical consultations but also creates sustainable business models for over-the-counter (OTC) health solutions, addressing both healthcare access and economic empowerment. This workshop will explore current advancements in digital health and strategies for scaling cross-border care for rural and impoverished communities. By leveraging technology, we can bridge the healthcare gap, improve quality of care, and build a future where no one is left behind.
    Expected Outcomes
ChatGPT said: The deliberations will produce a policy paper and a high-impact project for LMIC governments, outlining a low-cost, asset-light, technology-driven primary care model. Designed for easy implementation with minimal investment and training, this model can also foster micro OTC entrepreneurs, transforming healthcare in 60+ nations. Following the paper’s release, discussion forums—organized in collaboration with ITU, WHO, and WTO—will drive actionable strategies, ensuring global adoption and meaningful impact.
Hybrid Format: To ensure seamless interaction between onsite and online participants, we will use a hybrid-friendly platform like Zoom or Webex with real-time chat and Q&A. A dedicated moderator for onsite discussions and a co-moderator for online interactions will ensure balanced participation. Live polling and Q&A tools (e.g., Slido, Mentimeter) will facilitate engagement, while structured agendas and breakout groups will promote collaboration. A pre-session orientation will guide speakers and attendees on hybrid engagement. Interactive formats with proper time allocation to online attendees, andpowered live transcription will enhance accessibility. Complementary tools will be used for continued engagement, and YouTube/LinkedIn Live (if permitted) will further participation. These strategies will create an inclusive and engaging experience for all attendees.
