    Description:

In alignment with the IGF 2025 theme of “Building Digital Governance Together”, this roundtable session will focus on furthering international cooperation in AI policy research, ensuring diverse stakeholder engagement, and strengthening mechanisms to integrate AI policy research into global governance processes. As AI systems and processes evolve rapidly alongside shifting geopolitical dynamics, governance and policy frameworks guiding their development and application must keep pace. A crucial challenge is ensuring evidence-based policy development. This session aims to strengthen the capacity for multistakeholder cooperation in AI policy development through methods for bridging research, policymaking, and industry practices. The discussion builds on the Roadmap for AI Policy Research, which was developed through international multistakeholder collaboration to identify key principles, research priorities, and governance strategies to ensure AI is ethical, transparent, and inclusive. The session will leverage roundtable discussions and live case studies to provide participants with a deeper understanding of how AI policy research can contribute to responsible AI governance. By bringing diverse stakeholders together to share practical knowledge on how to contribute to AI policy research through collaborations, capacity-building initiatives, and knowledge-sharing platforms, this session will strengthen the ability of AI policy research initiatives to effectively inform AI governance. Participants will engage with experts from academia, industry, civil society, and government to discuss core policy priorities, including: Transboundary AI Governance Accountability and Transparency AI and Sustainable Development In addition, participants will identify avenues for effective integration of AI policy research into practice, by exploring needs, challenges, and opportunities for bridging policy priorities with AI policy research initiatives and outcomes. Through these activities, international and multistakeholder collaboration, and with the support of the AI Policy Research Roadmap, we will collectively work towards evidence-based, ethical, and sustainable AI policy and governance.
