Policy Question(s)
1. How can platform governance promote greater transparency and fairness in content distribution while safeguarding press freedom?
2. What regulatory frameworks can protect the sustainability of journalism in the face of AI-driven disruptions and platform concentration?
3. How can countries in the Global South collaborate to shape international digital governance and media sustainability policies?
What will participants gain from attending this session? Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how platform governance, AI-driven distribution models, and regulatory policies impact journalism and democracy in the Global South. They will explore initiatives that challenge dominant platform business models, investigate alternative media financing mechanisms, and contribute to the development of policy guidelines for sustainable journalism.
Description:
The rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the global media landscape, significantly affecting the sustainability of journalism, content production, distribution, and monetization. In the Global South, these challenges are intensified by the dominance of major digital platforms that control access to information, influence public discourse, and limit media independence. This panel will critically examine how the governance of digital platforms impacts journalism’s economic viability, editorial autonomy, and the overarching information ecosystem. Experts from Brazil, South Africa, and Indonesia will discuss key issues such as content moderation, algorithmic transparency, and regulatory responses designed to promote a free and diverse press. The session will also emphasize South-South cooperation strategies that enhance media resilience and foster more equitable digital policies. Participants will engage in an interactive discussion, contributing to a collaborative policy document that outlines recommendations for addressing the challenges of platform governance and the role of AI in shaping the media landscape.
