Policy Question(s)
1. With countries and local governments integrating blockchain into finance, regulation, and voting, what policies are needed to promote interoperability, compliance, and public trust in digital assets?
2. How can governments ensure the secure and responsible adoption of blockchain and digital asset technology while mitigating risks such as fraud, volatility, and illicit activity?
3. What role does the Blockchain Maturity Model (BMM) play in establishing global standards for blockchain adoption across industries, and how can governments implement it effectively?
What will participants gain from attending this session? Attendees will learn about the massive opportunities for using blockchain, digital assets and cryptocurrency to solve public sector challenges. They will also learn about open-source guides and standards to support the development, investment, acquisition, and adoption of emerging technologies to support the UN SDGs.
SDGs
Description:
Learn how blockchain and digital assets are now being embraced by governments. Here are some examples: 1) Elections & Voting – Estonia, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, and the U.S. have explored blockchain-based voting to improve election security 2) Government Budget Tracking – Blockchain enhances fiscal transparency and accountability. 3) Real-World Asset Tokenization – Governments are tokenizing assets like sports stadiums and infrastructure, enabling fractional ownership to drive economic development. 4) Regulatory Compliance – Governments use blockchain to meet regulations like the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), ensuring transparency. 5) Strategic Bitcoin Reserves – Nations like the U.S., Brazil, Poland, Bhutan, and El Salvador are accumulating Bitcoin, along with states such as Texas, Ohio, and Utah. Despite progress, adoption is hindered by the lack of standards. The UN IGF Dynamic Coalition on Blockchain Assurance & Standardization is developing the Blockchain Maturity Model to establish secure and efficient industry standards.
