    Policy Question(s)
How do green technologies such as clean and modern energy solutions support a transformative digital economy? How can technology transform the green economy but, at the same time, ensure cost efficiency such as integration of green technologies into infrastructure and industry? How can we enhance stakeholder collaboration in achieving integration of green technologies into infrastructure and industry for sustainable production processes? Through the acceleration of stakeholders collaboration, what would be the strategy in checking the progress and outcomes for resource resilience and investment in green technologies?
What will participants gain from attending this session? This session will offer the knowledge of green technologies and its application in the Global South. We invited speakers from relevant expertise who will be pleased to share their fields of expertise. We invited various yet relevant speakers who will have their take on carbon footprints, the adoption of green technologies and their impacts. The session will provide an in-depth understanding of how different sectors such as academia, civil society, the private sector, and technical experts address environmental technology and its innovation followed by its purpose of creating awareness to the participants. Through the roundtable discussion, attendees will engage with diverse perspectives, fostering experts' opinions on sustainability solutions for the future. Furthermore, the discussion will be made to support the interaction between speakers and participants, particularly equip participants with the knowledge of green technology and carbon footprints.
    Description:

The intersection of Green Technology and the Digital Economy offers a transformative pathway for sustainable development in Southeast Asia, particularly for the Global South. Green Technology, encompassing both software and hardware, aims to enhance environmental productivity while supporting ecosystems. However, its high resource and energy demands pose economic challenges. As the region faces increasing environmental challenges such as carbon footprints and the need for economic growth, the integration of digital innovations with green technologies presents a unique opportunity to address both objectives simultaneously. This session builds on discussions from SEA yIGF 2024 recommendation and explores how the region can integrate digital innovations with green technologies to tackle environmental challenges while fostering economic growth. For example, Indonesia’s ambitious plan to deploy 2 million electric cars and 13 million motorbikes by 2030 highlights the dual objectives of reducing carbon emissions and driving economic transformation. However, challenges such as establishing battery manufacturing, infrastructure readiness, and affordability remain significant hurdles. India’s Green Technologies further highlight the potential of digital integration for sustainability. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has committed to achieve India energy independence by 2047, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), which calls for ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy. Rather than concentrating only on highly developed regions, this ambitious goal requires questioning the traditional methods of implementing policies and beginning at the grassroots level. Environmental Megatrends such as emissions from data centers and Internet networks, rapid obsolescence of technology tools, environmental impact of manufacturing components, and energy-intensive construction of subsea networks complicate sustainability efforts. Advancing green technology in the Global South requires a cohesive strategy: simplify regulations, fostering international partnerships for resource stability, and attracting investments in green technologies. Collaboration among stakeholders is key to driving sustainable digital transformation, and balancing economic growth.
    Expected Outcomes
The session will feature insightful case studies presented by two speakers, focusing on Green Technology for a Transformative Digital Economy. Emphasizing multi stakeholder engagement, it will reflect stronger collaboration among civil society, academia, the private sector, and the technical community, reflecting current trends in the Global South. An open floor segment will encourage participants to share their insights and contribute to the discussion. The session outcomes will be published on the Southeast Asia Youth IGF (SEA Youth IGF) website, shared across the mailing list, and showcased at SEA Youth IGF 2025 to continue the dialogue and drive future initiatives.
Hybrid Format: Our experienced moderator will facilitate virtual engagement alongside the on-site moderator, ensuring active contributions from remote participants. We will enhance interactivity through Q&A and open floor segments, encouraging comments, suggestions, and feedback from all attendees. As the organizing team, we will promote the session across social media platforms and networks while coordinating logistics with speakers, the UN IGF Secretariat, and our team.
