Targets: The presentation aims to promote the generation of scientific, methodological, and technological knowledge to report how climate change is communicated with citizens in media: TV and radio. It focuses in the public sector with a public-private collaboration, favouring the creation of a multidisciplinary research network to promote the complementarity capacities and optimise existing research resources. It targets SDGs and public administrations and public media outlets (TV and radio). The choice of these two sectors are related to the urgent need to focus on the citizen as one of the driving forces in climate change, and how to make the communication efficient, engaging, which leaves no citizen behind. Diversity in citizen capabilities and languages are at the heart of this proposed presentation, as it is also the development of open-source tools and replicable methodology towards measuring impact. There is no doubt that the challenge of efficient and clear communication in climate change and sustainability are at the heart of the Zero Net objective.

Description

Media content and its consumption in screens is today ubiquitous. This intense production of media content unavoidably impacts on the environment. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) estimates that an average film production “with a budget of over US $70m generates 2,840 tonnes of Co2e, the equivalent amount absorbed by 3,709 acres of forest in a year”. Other sources of information such as Greenpeace points to Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) for generating “up to 3% of global carbon emissions (on par with air travel)”. Sir David Attenborough recently commented “saving our planet is now a communications challenge.” The quote uses communications in plural, and we believe this challenge is twofold. On the one hand there is a need to design clear communication approaches. On the other hand, the citizen should be at the centre of the communication as an active and engaged audience member. There is a need to gather data from media content. The quest for gathering data for its interpretation has been at the heart of environmental politics directing the research agenda in some fields. The European Council Directive 20051321EC of 6 July 2005 established a framework for the setting of eco design requirements for energy-using products. This presentation will present a way to understand the communication with citizens in the media, and how to gather data to address needs and expectations.

The session will have an online moderator, and also a face to face moderator.
The remote participation will be accessible, securing subtitles, and also audio description of all visual cues.
The Subtitling will be provided free by the platform, and the audio description will be provided live by the presenter: Pilar Orero.
