Targets: When online harms and abuse persist, and toxic polarization is rewarded by the very design of the tech platforms, we see triggers of real-world violence. It is critical to identify the causal link between the design of tech -- particularly our social technologies - and our ability to transform violent conflict without violence, and ensure that particularly those most vulnerable to this violence - children - are protected. Lastly, because of the toxic polarization that these social technologies are fuelling, we are being less equipped to make inclusive and participatory decisions. This is where specifically pro-socially designed deliberative tech can also be harnessed to contribute to the advancement of SDG16.

    Format

    Roundtable

Following brief contributions from Lena and Ravi, we will engage in interactive discussions with the participants. Our aim is to introduce them to prosocial design governance, and see how it can meet their needs as policy-makers, regulators, civil society in building a safer, healthier and more trustworthy internet. We will share examples of design changes and how this has been applied in ways that can meet the participants' needs, while also offering them guidance of how to adapt promising practices to their context.

    Description

Lena Slachmuijlder and Ravi Iyer will offer contributions about how we can incentivize upstream prosocial design changes, in order to make an internet which is more trustworthy, safer and which promotes healthy human relationships. By outlining examples of design codes and affordances, as well as use cases of how ranking and recommender systems can be changed - including through regulation - the session will explore the notions of prosocial design governance. After brief contributions the time will be used in interactive discussions with the participants, ensuring that the content best meets their needs.

We can welcome people online for this session, so long as there is an appropriate technology to facilitate everyone being heard during the session.
